Rehearse the plan on the real market, with fake money — then look at what you actually did.
Paper trading means placing practice orders against real market prices without real money. Done properly, it is the cheapest way to find out whether you can follow your own plan — before the market charges you for the lesson.
The trap is treating it as a game. Paper trading is only useful if the conditions match real trading: live prices, a real order book, realistic fills, and an honest record of every trade you took.
What makes paper trading worth doing
- Live prices, not replays. The market should move while you decide, exactly as it will when the money is real.
- The same tools you will use for real. If you will trade from a DOM ladder, practise from a DOM ladder.
- A journal you cannot argue with. Every trade, its size, its result and the session total — so you review behaviour, not memories.
- A fixed plan. Decide your setup, stop and size before the session. Paper trading measures whether you follow it.
A simple practice routine
1 — Mark levelsBefore the session, mark the levels you care about on the chart: prior day high and low, session open, Smart Levels.
2 — Wait for the levelOnly engage when price reaches one of them. Watch the footprint and tape for how the auction behaves there.
3 — Place the practice tradeEnter from the ladder with a stop on the other side of the level and a size you would really use.
4 — Review the sessionRead the statistics journal afterwards: win rate, average win and loss, and the trades you took that were not in the plan.
Paper results are not real results. Fills on a live account can be worse, and real money changes how people behave. Use paper trading to build the habit, not to forecast profit.
