Charts show where price went. Order flow shows who was buying, who was selling, and who ran out of steam.
Order flow trading means reading the actual buy and sell orders behind price movement — not just the candles they produce. Instead of asking "where did price go?", you ask "who was aggressive, who was passive, and did their orders move price or get absorbed?"
Why crypto suits order flow
Major crypto exchanges publish every trade with its aggressor side — whether a buyer lifted the ask or a seller hit the bid — and stream the order book in real time. That is exactly the data order flow tools need. On liquid pairs such as BTC/USDT and ETH/USDT the flow is deep enough to read cleanly around the clock.
The four core tools
| Tool | What it shows | Answers the question |
| Footprint chart | Bid and ask volume at every price inside each candle | Who was aggressive at this level, and did it work? |
| DOM ladder | Resting limit orders above and below price | Where are orders waiting? |
| Time & sales (tape) | Every trade as it prints, with size and side | What is hitting the market right now? |
| Cumulative delta (CVD) | Running total of aggressive buy minus sell volume | Is participation confirming the move? |
The patterns worth learning first
- Absorption — heavy aggressive selling into a low, but price does not go lower. Passive buyers are taking everything.
- Exhaustion — volume dries up at the end of a move; the last aggressive traders are done.
- Delta divergence — price makes a new high while cumulative delta does not. Fewer aggressive buyers are pushing it.
- Stacked imbalances — several consecutive price rows where one side traded far more than the other, showing a side taking control.
A simple routine to start
1 — Levels firstMark a few levels before the session: prior day high and low, the session open, obvious swing points. Order flow is most useful at a level.
2 — Watch the reactionWhen price arrives, watch the footprint and tape. Is aggressive volume moving price through, or being absorbed?
3 — Practise on paperPlace practice trades from the ladder with a stop on the other side of the level. How paper trading works →
4 — ReviewLook at the session journal afterwards: which reads were right, and which trades were not in your plan.
Order flow does not predict the future. It shows how the auction is behaving right now, which helps you decide whether a level is holding. It works best combined with structure and strict risk management.

What is order flow trading?Order flow trading means reading the actual buy and sell orders behind price movement — aggressive market orders, resting limit orders and the volume traded at each price — to judge whether a move is supported or running out of strength.
Does order flow work for crypto?Yes. Major crypto exchanges publish every trade with its aggressor side and stream the order book live, which is the data footprint charts, DOM ladders and cumulative delta are built from.
What tools do I need for order flow trading? The core tools are a footprint chart, a DOM (depth of market) ladder, time and sales (the tape) and cumulative volume delta. Volume profile and VWAP are useful additions.
Is there free order flow software for crypto?Yes. The LTAI Terminal in LiveTradingAI provides a footprint chart, DOM ladder, tape and paper trading on live Binance data in the browser, free with a Google sign-in.
Can beginners learn order flow?Yes, if they start small: learn to read absorption and exhaustion at a few key levels, practise with paper trading, and review every session before risking money.
