Volume profile is a histogram drawn sideways on the price axis: for every price level it shows how much volume traded there over a chosen period. Where an ordinary volume bar tells you when trading happened, volume profile tells you where.
The parts of a profile
| Term | What it is | How traders use it |
|---|---|---|
| Point of control (POC) | The single price with the most volume | A magnet and a reference level; price often returns to it |
| Value area (VAH / VAL) | The range where about 70% of the volume traded, with its high and low | Inside = fair price, balance; outside = price is being tested |
| High-volume node (HVN) | A thick part of the profile | Price tends to slow down and rotate there |
| Low-volume node (LVN) | A thin part of the profile | Price tends to move through it quickly; often acts as a boundary |
How it is used
- Balance vs imbalance. When price holds inside the value area, the market is in balance and tends to rotate. A move that holds outside the value area suggests a new price is being accepted.
- Returning to value. A failed break outside the value area often travels back to the point of control.
- Levels with a reason. The POC, value-area edges and low-volume gaps are levels the market itself created — useful places to watch order flow.
Session, visible-range and anchored profiles
A session profile resets every day or session, so you can compare today's value with yesterday's. A visible-range profile covers whatever is on screen. An anchored profile starts from a point you choose — a swing low, a news event — and shows where business has been done since.
Common mistakes
- Treating the POC as a guaranteed bounce. It is a reference, not a wall.
- Mixing periods. A one-hour profile and a one-month profile answer different questions. Know which one you are reading.
- Ignoring the footprint. The profile shows what traded; the footprint chart shows who was aggressive inside each candle.
