What is a liquidity sweep?

Why price so often pokes through the obvious high or low, takes the stops, and turns around.

Updated 2026-11-02

A liquidity sweep (also called a liquidity grab or stop hunt) is a quick move through an obvious high or low that triggers the stop orders resting beyond it, followed by a sharp move back the other way.

Stops cluster in predictable places: just above a prior high, just below a prior low, beyond a range or a round number. When price reaches them, those stops turn into market orders. A large participant who wants to buy can use the burst of sell orders from triggered stops below a low as the liquidity to fill against — which is why the move often reverses right after.

Buy-side and sell-side liquidity

Sweep or breakout?

The two start identically — price goes through the level. What happens next separates them:

Liquidity sweepReal breakout
Candle closeCloses back inside the range, often with a long wickCloses beyond the level and holds
Follow-throughNone — the next candles move away from the levelContinuation, often a retest of the level from the other side
Order flowHeavy aggressive volume at the extreme that fails to move price further (absorption)Aggressive volume keeps lifting or hitting, and price keeps moving

Frequently asked questions

What is a liquidity sweep in trading?A liquidity sweep is a fast move through an obvious high or low that triggers the stop orders resting beyond it, followed by a sharp reversal. It is also called a liquidity grab or a stop hunt.
What is the difference between a liquidity sweep and a breakout? Both go through a level. A sweep closes back inside the range and moves away; a breakout closes beyond the level, holds, and usually continues or retests the level from the other side.
Where does liquidity sit on a chart?Buy-side liquidity sits above highs and sell-side liquidity sits below lows, where traders place stop-losses and breakout orders. Equal highs, equal lows and range edges hold the most obvious clusters.
How can order flow confirm a liquidity sweep? On a footprint chart, a sweep often shows heavy aggressive volume at the extreme that fails to push price further — a sign the orders are being absorbed by the other side.
