Smart money concepts (SMC) is a way of reading price charts that assumes large participants — banks, funds, big trading firms — leave visible footprints when they enter and exit positions. SMC tries to locate those footprints: where big orders were filled, where liquidity is resting, and where the market structure is changing.
It grew out of the ICT (Inner Circle Trader) teaching and older supply-and-demand methods. The vocabulary is new; most of the underlying ideas — support and resistance, stop runs, trend structure — are long established.
The building blocks
How they fit together
A typical SMC read runs top-down: find the higher-timeframe structure, wait for price to take liquidity (a sweep of a high or low), look for a change of character on a lower timeframe, then look for an entry at an order block or fair value gap in the discount (for longs) or premium (for shorts) part of the range — with the stop beyond the zone.
The honest limits
- It is interpretation, not measurement. Two traders will mark different order blocks on the same chart. Consistent, rule-based marking matters more than any single concept.
- "Smart money" is an assumption. A chart pattern cannot prove who placed the orders. Order-flow data — the footprint, the tape, cumulative delta — shows actual aggressive buying and selling and is a useful cross-check.
- Hindsight makes it look perfect. Every zone looks obvious after price reacted to it. Test your rules on charts you have not seen yet, or practise with paper trading before risking money.
