BOS vs CHoCH: break of structure vs change of character

One confirms the trend, the other is the first warning it may be over — and confusing them is expensive.

Updated 2026-11-02

Break of structure (BOS) is when price breaks a swing point in the same direction as the trend — a new higher high in an uptrend, or a new lower low in a downtrend. It confirms the trend is still in charge.

Change of character (CHoCH) is when price breaks a swing point against the trend — in an uptrend, it closes below the last higher low. It is the first sign that the side in control may be changing.

Reading structure first

Both terms only make sense once you have marked the swings. An uptrend is a series of higher highs and higher lows; a downtrend is lower highs and lower lows. Mark the swing highs and lows on the timeframe you trade, then watch which ones break.

Why a CHoCH is not a reversal yet

A single change of character is a warning, not a verdict. Price often breaks a swing low in an uptrend, grabs the liquidity below it, and then resumes higher — the break was a liquidity sweep, not a change of trend. Many traders wait for the new direction to prove itself: a CHoCH followed by a BOS in the new direction.

Wick or close?

Decide your rule and keep it. Counting a wick through a swing as a break produces far more signals and far more false ones. Requiring a candle close beyond the level is slower but filters out most sweeps. Whichever you choose, apply it the same way every time — inconsistent marking is the most common reason two traders disagree about the same chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is BOS in trading?BOS stands for break of structure: price breaking a swing point in the same direction as the trend, such as a new higher high in an uptrend. It confirms the trend is continuing.
What is CHoCH in trading?CHoCH stands for change of character: price breaking a swing point against the trend, such as closing below the last higher low in an uptrend. It is an early warning that the trend may be changing.
What is the difference between BOS and CHoCH?A break of structure goes with the trend and suggests continuation. A change of character goes against the trend and is the first sign of a possible reversal.
Does a CHoCH mean the trend has reversed? Not on its own. A change of character can be a liquidity sweep that quickly reverses. Many traders wait for a change of character followed by a break of structure in the new direction before treating the trend as changed.
Should a break of structure use wicks or candle closes?Either can work if applied consistently. Wicks give earlier but noisier breaks; candle closes are slower but filter out most sweeps.
